I visited the Social Security Administrating Body for Health, so-called Badan Penyelenggara Jaminan Sosial Kesehatan (BPJS) Headquarters (HQ), to meet with the President Director, Prof. Ali Ghufron Mukti, I gave him Dr. Vichai Chokevivat’s book, “37 Years on the Sampran Path,” launched during the Prince Mahidol Award Conference 2025, as he missed the launching session. This book discusses Thailand’s success in Universal Health Coverage (UHC). I also met Dr. Halik Malik, BPJS’s Advisory Board member.
Additionally, I attended a presentation on the Indonesian National Health Insurance (BPJS) data center during the World Bank’s visit to BPJS HQ.
BPJS Indonesia manages extensive data, covering nearly 100% of the population and processing 1.9 million health care utilization/transaction/claims daily. This data provides crucial evidence for decision-makers, particularly in the pursuit of achieving Universal Health Coverage.
I was especially impressed by the real-time data monitoring combined with Geographic Information System (GIS) mapping throughout Indonesia. This technology enabled me to access real-time information on:
- The number of BPJS members across Indonesia, segmented by location, and details about active memberships.
- Health providers/ health facilities contracted by BPJS are categorized by primary and referral services. This includes hospitals, primary health care (PHC) centers, clinics, and supporting facilities such as laboratories and pharmacies. The geographic distribution of healthcare providers allows for an assessment of their density and accessibility within a 12-kilometer radius.
- Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for healthcare providers, including chronic disease health screenings.
- Epidemiological data that tracks disease trends over time and across different locations.
In the future, big data analysis from patients’ medical records could improve our understanding of disease trends, predict health insurance claims, forecast patient volume, and identify healthcare needs. Additionally, this data could reveal preventive measures taken alongside the treatment provided.
